CAMS and CAMEO
Monitoring the composition of the atmosphere is a key objective of the European Union’s flagship Space programme Copernicus.
Combining satellite observations with numerical modelling by means of data assimilation and inversion techniques is a main method by which the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) exploits the information content of Earth-Observation data of the composition of the atmosphere.
CAMS relies on a global production system - ECMWF’s Integrated Forecasting System (IFS), extended by modules for reactive trace gases, aerosols and greenhouse gases, and on a geographically distributed ensemble of eleven European regional air quality models.
CAMEO will further improve CAMS by enhancing the quality and efficiency of the CAMS production systems;
-> CAMEO is preparing CAMS for the uptake of new satellite observations, including from geostationary missions, which will provide unprecedented insight into the properties of atmospheric aerosols and the temporal variability of air pollution over Europe and worldwide.
-> CAMEO will advance the data assimilation and inversion capacity of the global and regional CAMS production systems and develop methods to provide novel uncertainty estimates for CAMS products - in direct response to requests from users .
Ease of transition
The transfer of developments from CAMEO into subsequent improvements of CAMS operational service elements is a main driver for the project.
The CAMEO project will contribute to scientifically challenging and more long-term developments of CAMS.
- Most developments in CAMEO will be carried out using the operational global and regional CAMS production system, ensuring that CAMEO developments will be ready for fast inclusion into CAMS
-The output of the project includes proof-of-concept demonstrators as well as operationally aligned and more mature developments to ensure an easy and fast integration of CAMEO results into CAMS.
CAMEO’s journey started with a virtual Kick-off meeting in January. The enthusiastic team are looking forward to maximising the project outcomes to benefit policymakers, businesses and citizens with enhanced atmospheric environmental information.
“Over two days, we held very constructive discussions on detailed plans for the three years ahead. In CAMEO we have gathered a wonderful group of people with an excellent track-record for fruitful collaboration,”
- Johannes Flemming, Project Coordinator of CAMEO.
